Jaguar Land Rover confirms plan to cut 4,000 jobs over two years

Britain's Jaguar Land Rover announced on Monday plans to cut nearly 10% of its workforce through voluntary redundancies over the next two years, as the luxury carmaker navigates a challenging automotive industry landscape. The company, owned by India's Tata Motors, employs around 43,000 people globally, with 34,000 of those in Britain.

JLR intends to eliminate approximately 4,000 jobs, targeting £1.7 billion in savings and aiming to lower its break-even point to around 300,000 vehicles. JLR CEO PB Balaji stated in a statement, "The automotive industry faces significant challenges, with technological change amidst intense competition and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty."

The job cuts come at a time when the UK government is striving to spur economic growth, with Finance Minister John Healey delivering a speech near JLR's Coventry headquarters to present a more optimistic economic outlook ahead of an anticipated tough budget in late October. JLR plans to launch five new products within the next year and invest £15 billion to £18 billion over the following five years in electrification, digital technologies, advanced manufacturing, and customer experience enhancements.

Despite these efforts, the company believes that making savings and streamlining its structure is necessary to enhance resilience amid the industry's challenges. Voluntary redundancy will primarily impact 26,000 salaried and management employees. Local authorities, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham's spokesperson and Mayor Richard Parker, have acknowledged the uncertainty and concern surrounding the decision, with the latter announcing a £500,000 package to support affected workers and their families.
