Bengal: Ban on sale of liquor on Maha Ashtami

Kolkata: Liquor shops and bars in West Bengal will remain shut on Maha Ashtami, the main day of the upcoming Durga Puja, according to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday. The state government announced a series of steps to ensure peaceful celebrations. Adhikari stated that no liquor would be sold anywhere in the state on Maha Ashtami.

He also announced a full ban on DJ music and immersion processions during the festival, emphasizing the need for discipline and the preservation of the festival's traditional essence. The administration asked Durga Puja committees to ensure that idols, pandals, and themes do not offend religious sentiments or undermine Sanatan traditions.

Theme-based Pujas are permissible, but organizers must exercise caution when choosing themes. The government restricted the use of roads for Puja-related activities, prohibiting their closure on national highways and limiting activities to 13 major roads in Kolkata. Puja inaugurations will not be allowed before the beginning of Devi Paksha, a bright lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin.

The state government has also planned cultural and social initiatives during the festival, such as two-day cultural programs in six major cities and special programs at six designated immersion ghats. Special arrangements will be made for persons with disabilities, residents of old-age homes, and people living in various ashrams to participate in Puja visits.

An impartial jury will be formed to award the Sharad Samman, which recognizes Durga Puja organizers for creative and artistic excellence.
