Homeschooling advocates push for clearer legal recognition in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya – Homeschooling advocates in Kenya are urging the government to establish clearer legal recognition for home education, asserting that the practice is widely used but not formally defined. Emmanuel Nandokha, Convenor of the Home Education Reforms Initiative, detailed the push during an interview on Capital FM’s Capital in the Morning.

Nandokha noted that homeschooling has been present in Kenya for years without official acknowledgment, and the initiative has garnered support from over 1,500 parents. He proposed that homeschooling be recognized alongside traditional public, private, and alternative education providers, urging the government to define it explicitly within existing education frameworks.

The current situation, Nandokha argued, creates a "legal lacuna," where homeschooling is referenced in some documents but lacks clear definition. Legal consequences for homeschooling, such as arrests and court proceedings, have already affected some families, as illustrated by the case of Silas, who faced arrest and subsequent legal challenges.

Advocates also debated how to regulate homeschooling if it were officially recognized, emphasizing the need to establish standards and education milestones while accommodating diverse home education methods, ranging from self-teaching to using tutors or micro-schools. The discussion also extended to the Basic Education Bill and alternative education provisions, with Nandokha cautioning against merely integrating homeschooling into existing frameworks, as this could perpetuate legal uncertainties.

Additionally, Rose Murigu, a parent who homeschooled her children between 2012 and 2015, shared her experience, highlighting the holistic nature of home education, which includes teaching beyond academic subjects and fostering real-world interactions. Murigu stressed that home education can be accessible to families regardless of financial means, provided they have access to resources.
