Grindr to pay £26m to settle claims it allegedly shared users’ HIV status

Grindr has agreed to pay £26 million to settle a lawsuit over allegations that it shared users' personal information, including their HIV status, with third parties. The class action suit was brought in the High Court in the UK in 2024 and later sued in the US, with more than 11,000 claimants signing up. Grindr, which became a publicly-listed company in 2022 after being taken over by data analytics services Apptimize and Localytics, disputes the allegations but acknowledges the distress caused to some UK users.

The settlement, announced on September 2, includes two payments of £13 million each, with the first by December 31, 2024 and the second by March 31, 2027. The lawsuit alleged that Grindr had breached UK privacy laws by sharing sensitive data, including HIV status, with third parties for commercial purposes.
