Five dead after Amazon cargo plane crashes at Miami airport

An Amazon Air cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport, killing five people and severely injuring five more. The Boeing 767-300 aircraft overshot the runway during its landing attempt from Puerto Rico and struck several vehicles on the ground. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the fatalities and injuries at a press conference.

Fire crews reached the scene almost immediately, but rescue efforts were hampered by trapped victims under vehicles. Three of the injured are in critical condition. The cause of the crash remains unknown and will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. The airport statement indicated the plane was disabled at the northwest end of the runway.

Over 200 firefighters extinguished the flames, with a fuel leak still present. Amazon expressed condolences to the victims and their families. The flight was operated by 21 Air, a North Carolina-based charter company. Weather conditions at the time included light thunderstorms and strong winds. The crash occurred during the busy Labor Day weekend travel period.
