EU to give Greenland a cash boost amid Trump annexation drive

The European Union is set to provide Greenland with a significant financial boost, as the crisis sparked by US President Donald Trump's push for US control of the island intensifies. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to unveil the plans for increased investments and strengthened political ties during her two-day visit to Greenland, which began on Sunday.

The package, described by von der Leyen as "substantial," will focus on sectors like critical minerals, satellite communications, and renewable energy. Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, has strongly rejected Trump's annexation claims. Despite leaving the EU in 1985, its citizens are still EU citizens. The EU's funding to Greenland has traditionally been used to support fishing rights and education.

The visit underscores the growing geopolitical importance of the Arctic region, where melting ice is opening up new shipping routes and mineral resources.
