EU set to give Greenland funding boost amid Trump threats

The European Union and Greenland are set to sign a new Joint Partnership agreement, which will see a significant increase in EU funding and investment. This development comes as heightened geopolitical tensions arise around the island due to former US President Donald Trump's threats to seize the territory by force. The EU established an official presence in Greenland two years ago, prior to Trump's return to office. Although Greenland formally withdrew from the EU in 1985, relations have remained close.

The updated Joint Partnership, a successor to an agreement dating back to 2015, will mark a substantial boost in support for various sectors. Funding will focus on education and fisheries, as well as infrastructure development including satellite and cable connectivity, hydropower, and critical raw materials. Additionally, the agreement will offer assistance for housing, tourism, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The EU's support is aligned with its Arctic strategy, recognizing that melting ice caps will open up new maritime shipping routes and intensify competition for access to resources. During a recent visit to Greenland, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the package's substantial nature, while sharing her reflections on the country's breathtaking landscapes and the visible impacts of climate change on the ice sheet.

Greenland's prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, expressed his nation's desire to build upon its close friendship and strong partnership with the EU.
