EU to give Greenland a cash boost amid Trump annexation drive

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen is set to announce a significant boost in investment for Greenland and closer political ties during a visit to the Danish Arctic territory on Monday. This move comes after US President Donald Trump's persistent calls for US control over the world's largest island, causing turmoil in US-European relations and NATO.

Von der Leyen's two-day visit to Nuuk, Greenland's capital, signifies the Arctic region's growing geopolitical importance as melting ice opens up new shipping routes and mineral wealth. The EU's investment package will focus on sectors such as critical minerals, satellite communications, and renewable energy. Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, has long received funding from the EU for fishing rights and education.

While Trump's insistence on US control over Greenland has strained ties with Europe, recent talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte have aimed to ease tensions and strengthen cooperation in Arctic security.
