China’s Moonshot and Z.ai bring AI model subscription race to Tmall’s retail shelves

China's artificial intelligence (AI) developers are expanding into a new market by offering AI subscription plans on Alibaba's consumer platform, Tmall. Moonshot AI, developer of the Kimi K3 model, and MiniMax are reportedly in talks to set up flagship stores on the e-commerce platform, alongside giants like Z.ai, which recently launched an online storefront for its GLM Coding Plan.

Tmall recently introduced an "AI Space Station," a central marketplace where users can buy AI subscriptions, top up tokens, and purchase specialized packages from Alibaba Cloud, Z.ai, MiniMax, and DeepSeek. This move comes as AI developers seek new ways to convert soaring user numbers into recurring revenue. Within 48 hours of Z.ai's storefront opening, transactions involving AI tokens and subscription products across Taobao and Tmall jumped by over 160%, according to a Tmall spokesperson.

By offering AI models in a retail setting, Chinese developers can turn software subscriptions into everyday products, reducing their reliance on direct website sales. However, this strategy could also make these developers more dependent on Alibaba's platform traffic. Competition among AI models will intensify as they vie for consumer attention through platform promotions and shopping festivals.
