Apple’s first foldable iPhone could debut this week: What we know so far

Apple is close to launching its inaugural foldable iPhone, set to debut at its September 9 event. Industry reports suggest the device may be called 'iPhone Ultra'. This new phone is rumored to join the iPhone 18 Pro series and fresh Apple Watch variants. If Apple unveils the model, it would mark the tech giant's first major foray into the foldable smartphone arena, dominated by Samsung, Google, and other Android makers.

Recent leaks have unveiled potential specifics about the iPhone Ultra's design, hardware, charging, pricing, and release timeline.

The device is said to have a thin, book-like structure, possibly measuring 4.5mm when open, possibly making it one of Apple's slimmest smartphones. Apple might employ Samsung's latest display technology to ensure a crease-free folding screen. The new phone is expected to display two screens: a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen. There are also reports of a nearly crease-free folding screen, rounded side bezels, and a robust hinge design.

The rear of the device mirrors Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold, with two cameras visible. Apple's upcoming A20 Pro chipset is expected to power the foldable, promising flagship-level performance and a dual-camera system. Additionally, Apple might reintroduce MagSafe wireless charging on the foldable iPhone, despite its slim design, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This could allow the device to function with existing MagSafe chargers, wallets, and magnetic accessories, a feature that would appeal to existing Apple users.

The iPhone Ultra is projected to start at around $2,000, which is around Rs 1.9 lakh. Previous estimates by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested a price range of $2,000 to $2,500, narrowing down to $2,300-$2,500. IDC has independently reported an average price of $2,550 for the iPhone Ultra. However, these figures are estimates as Apple has not officially announced the price of the device.

The foldable iPhone is expected to hit stores in fall 2026, potentially alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Exact release dates are uncertain, with one estimate placing the retail release around September 19, based on the previous year's iPhone 17 launch timing. The validity of these reports remains uncertain until Apple officially confirms the device.
