Andreeva survives in three sets against Potapova

French Open champion Mirra Andreeva of Russia advanced to the US Open quarter-finals on Monday, defeating Anastasia Potapova 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Andreeva, the fifth seed, overcame a slow start and responded sportingly after Potapova suffered a painful fall in the final game. Potapova, who defeated Amanda Anisimova in the previous round, lost her footing while reaching for a shot, falling to the ground and writhing in pain.

Andreeva, who called Potapova a "pretty good friend," rushed over to assist her friend to the side of the court for medical treatment. The two women embraced after Andreeva closed the match with a backhand winner down the line. Despite dropping the first set and committing more unforced errors, Andreeva steadied herself and changed her strategy, incorporating more off-pace shots to keep Potapova off balance.

Andreeva, who has looked up to Potapova since Potapova won the junior Wimbledon title in 2016, has had to adjust to life as a Grand Slam champion after a nervous second-round loss at Wimbledon and middling results in the US Open warmup tournaments.
