Watch: Black smoke over Miami after Amazon cargo plane overshoots runway

An Amazon cargo plane, Prime Air Flight 7598, overran a runway at Miami International Airport and burst into flames, striking multiple vehicles on Sunday afternoon local time. All runways were closed as a result of the crash, which sent thick black smoke into the sky. Over 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene, arriving to find the aircraft engulfed in flames and attending to potential victims.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the plane had overrun the runway around 2pm after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a full ground stop at the airport and the deployment of FAA investigators to determine the cause of the accident. The 32-year-old Boeing 767, originally designed for passenger transport, had been reconfigured as a cargo plane in 2015 before being operated by 21 Air.

At the crash site, the plane came to rest near a roadway alongside two semi-trucks, largely intact despite the fire. All runways and taxiways at the airport were closed, causing delays for approximately 250 flights, as reported by FlightAware. The FAA warned that delays would likely continue even after the airport reopened, with arrivals and departures expected to resume at a reduced rate.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported they were gathering information and working closely with local authorities to understand the sequence of events that led to the crash. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel emphasized that the company's top priority was the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved in the incident.
