UN approves resolution in support of map that shows Africa's true size

The United Nations has voted to transition away from the Mercator global map, which has been in use since the 16th century, in favor of maps that more accurately represent the true sizes of countries. This resolution, sponsored by African states, aims to address the perception that the continent is of lesser importance. Togo took the lead in this initiative, which is part of the African Union's campaign to reduce the use of the Mercator map, which distorts the sizes of land masses, making Greenland appear as large as Africa when Africa is actually about 14 times larger.

Togo's Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, emphasized that "a fair world begins with a fair map." The resolution, passed by a vote of 164 to 1 with 6 abstentions, promotes the Equal Earth projection, which more accurately depicts the size of continents. However, the Togolese ministry clarified that the resolution does not challenge the use of Mercator projection for maritime and aerial navigation, where it remains essential.

The United States was the sole country to vote against the resolution, arguing that it promotes an ideological agenda and diverts attention from genuine global issues. Togo plans to update its school geography materials by the end of the year and will encourage other governments, schools, international organizations, and technology companies to shift away from the Mercator projection.

This campaign is linked to broader African efforts to tackle the legacies of colonialism, but it is not seen as an attack on Europe or any other civilization. The world is evolving, and so too is Africa.
