UAE team Kinetiz triumphs as driverless racing series A2RL makes Imola debut

The UAE-based Kinetiz secured victory at the inaugural A2RL international race held at Imola, Italy, on Saturday, with its autonomous Sparkz car edging ahead by nearly 11 seconds. Germany's Constructor Racing claimed second place, while Italy's Unimore Racing and PoliMOVE finished third and fourth respectively, the latter suffering a collision between their two cars during the event.

Germany's Technische Universität München (TUM) rounded out the five-team field. This marked the first time A2RL, an autonomous racing league, ventured beyond the UAE since two years of competition at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The race formed part of the ACI Racing Weekend alongside other motorsport events. The presence of numerous spectators at Imola provided them with the opportunity to witness a unique form of motorsport.

Raffaele Giammaria, director of operations at ACI Sport, remarked on the stark contrast between a driverless car and one with a human driver. Giammaria highlighted the rapid advancement of technology, stating, "The performance achieved by these cars, and especially the gap between their lap times and those of a human driver, underscores how significantly the technology is progressing."

The 12-lap race featured autonomous vehicles capable of reaching speeds over 250kph, with the cars required to maintain proximity to one another, respond to evolving situations, and decide when to pursue or evade. The collision between Unimore's Gianna and PoliMOVE's Eva emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by autonomous cars racing at high speeds.

Michael Sonderby, CEO of Abu Dhabi autonomous mobility company SteerAI, acknowledged decision-making as the most significant hurdle for autonomous technology. "There are still scenarios where errors can occur," Sonderby stated. "The real challenge lies in the speed at which the system must process and act upon all relevant inputs."

Giammaria sees potential for autonomous racing to inform human driver training, emphasizing the differences between a computer and a human driver's approach to corners, throttle, and braking. Italian racing school Scuola Federale, under Giammaria's direction, is now investigating potential insights from this autonomous approach.

Beyond the race, SteerAI developed the original autonomy stack for A2RL, which has since diverged into separate projects. While A2RL focuses on high-speed racing, SteerAI concentrates on autonomous vehicles for challenging off-road conditions. Sonderby noted that pushing autonomous systems at racing speeds could eventually lead to more advanced applications and broader use cases, including the possibility of autonomous vehicles being employed in hazardous environments to minimize human exposure to risk.

Giammaria emphasized the significance of hosting A2RL's first international race in Imola, Italy, due to the circuit's association with Italy's Motor Valley, where renowned car manufacturers are headquartered. The move reflects the broader ambitions for UAE-developed technology.
