UAE team Kinetiz triumphs as driverless racing series A2RL makes Imola debut

The UAE team Kinetiz secured victory in the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League's inaugural race at Imola, Italy, on Saturday. Their driverless Sparkz car crossed the finish line more than 11 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, Germany's Constructor Racing. Italy's Unimore Racing claimed the third position, followed by another Italian team, PoliMOVE, in fourth.

The collision between Unimore’s Gianna car and PoliMOVE’s Eva marked the first incident during the event. Germany's TUM rounded out the five competing teams. This marked A2RL's (Autonomous Racing League) first race outside the UAE after two years at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The competition took place at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, as part of the ACI Racing Weekend, alongside various other racing events.

The race attracted a new audience, with fans arriving in Imola for the other races to witness this unique form of motorsport. Raffaele Giammaria, director of operations at ACI Sport, described the experience as immediate and significant, emphasizing the rapid advancement of technology. The 12-lap race featured cars capable of surpassing 250kph, challenging the drivers to navigate complex scenarios while maintaining high speeds.

Michael Sonderby, CEO of Abu Dhabi autonomous mobility company SteerAI, highlighted decision-making as the most significant challenge for autonomous vehicles. The collision during the race served as a reminder of the ongoing difficulties faced in wheel-to-wheel racing at such speeds. Giammaria sees potential for autonomous racing to influence the training of human drivers, noting the differences in approach and decision-making between human and computer drivers.

SteerAI, which developed the original autonomy stack for A2RL, has since focused on autonomous vehicles for off-road environments. The company sees potential applications for autonomous systems in reducing risks for humans in dangerous environments, such as those faced by workers in energy production. Giammaria views the race as a significant honor for Italy, given the region's association with prestigious car manufacturers.

The event also reflects the broader ambitions of UAE's technology, as the foundation laid during A2RL's races in Abu Dhabi is now being applied in various other fields.
