Schoolboy shuttler Shahadzryl bags two titles at Lee Chong Wei Cup

KUALA LUMPUR – Schoolboy badminton player Shahadzryl Suhaime secured two championships at the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup tournament today, becoming the only participant to win titles in both the under-13 boys singles and doubles categories. The 13-year-old from Bukit Jalil Sports School displayed impressive physical endurance throughout the nine-day event, which commenced on August 29, after overcoming a set deficit in the final against Penang’s Jorus Lee Yi H’ng, winning 12-15, 15-12, 15-12.

Shahadzryl also teamed up with fellow Putrajaya schoolmate Gan Giap Han in the U13 boys doubles, defeating Sarawak's Ahmad Aniq Rafiq Mohd Zariffi-Lucas Ho Ming Joon 15-12, 15-12. Despite the demanding schedule and starting from the qualifying rounds, Shahadzryl revealed that capturing both prizes was his initial goal. The Kuantan native, who began playing badminton at age five and admires legendary player Lee Chong Wei, aims to join the Badminton Association of Malaysia's national setup.

His doubles partner, 13-year-old Giap Han, expressed their winning mentality before competing and aspired to be part of BAM in the future. Shahadzryl's victory earned him RM2,000, while the double triumph yielded RM3,000.
