Rutherford throws for 140 yards and scores 2 TDs, Stephen F. Austin defeats East Texas A&M 44-7

Gavin Rutherford delivered a stellar performance, rushing for two touchdowns and contributing 140 passing yards as Stephen F. Austin secured a dominant 44-7 victory over East Texas A&M on Saturday night. The Lumberjacks (2-0, 2-0 Southland), currently ranked 13th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, claimed their sixth consecutive home opener and 12th straight win since a 0-2 start in 2025.

Facing a challenging start to the game with a three-and-out drive, the Lumberjacks quickly capitalized, scoring points on their subsequent three drives to seize a 21-7 lead. A crucial interception at the opposing team's 5-yard line further extended their lead, followed by a 40-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Jenkins, which further bolstered the margin.

Late in the third quarter, Jenkins added another score with a swift 40-yard dash, magnifying the gap. Stephen F. Austin sealed the game with a single field goal before the final whistle. Preston Alford led the way for East Texas A&M with a commendable 76 yards on six carries, including a 51-yard dash. Clayton Wayland stood out with four receptions for 46 yards, while Carlos Alvarado connected on all three of his field goal attempts, from distances of 23, 26, and 37 yards.

For the Lions, Eric Rodriguez completed 9 of 16 passes for 110 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.

As for the upcoming matches, East Texas A&M will host Northwestern State next Saturday, while Stephen F. Austin will travel to Abilene Christian to kick off their nonconference schedule.
