How Robert Pattinson ended up playing To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen in Primetime

Robert Pattinson's journey to playing Chris Hansen in Primetime began with a different intention. The English actor initially took on the role as a producer for the film, based on the NBC Dateline show To Catch a Predator. However, as he and his collaborators discussed the project, they found themselves imitating Hansen, ultimately leading Pattinson to attach himself more to the character.

The role proved to be challenging for Pattinson, as he struggled with adopting Hansen's accent. Director Lance Oppenheim, who had only directed documentaries prior, became involved due to his interest in Hansen's phenomenon. Oppenheim's wife presented him with a Cameo video featuring Hansen, which convinced him of the character's potential.

Primetime, written by Ajon Singh, draws inspiration from journalist Luke Dittrich's Esquire article, Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die, which explores a 2006 sting operation involving Texas assistant district attorney Bill Conradt. Despite Chris Hansen's disinterest in the project and his objections to the non-disclosure agreement (NDA), Pattinson expressed hope that Hansen would enjoy the film.

Actress Phoebe Bridgers, who made her acting debut in the movie, found it intimidating. Pattinson's busy schedule for the next two years and the upcoming release of Dune: Part Three highlight his packed acting calendar. The Venice Film Festival's world premiere of Primetime sparked a 9-minute standing ovation, marking the beginning of a high-wattage event in the festival lineup.
