Qatar tightens measures to combat unaccredited university degrees

Doha, Qatar has implemented stricter measures to counteract fake and unaccredited university degrees, aiming to safeguard academic standards and protect students. Abdul Rahman Al Maqbali, a technical affairs specialist at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, revealed that the Ministry employs a comprehensive verification process to ensure qualifications adhere to recognized standards.

This includes assessing the accreditation of the overseas institution, the study system's alignment with Qatari standards, and the student's academic progression from secondary to tertiary education. The Ministry also scrutinizes whether university branches operate under the parent university's name and are officially accredited.

Fake qualifications may stem from non-existent institutions, often operating solely online. When confronted with suspected fraud, the Ministry contacts authorities in the institution's country of origin or where the study was claimed to occur, referring the case to legal authorities for appropriate action. Maqbali emphasized that the goal is not merely to reject dubious qualifications but to uphold fairness and protect students from fraudulent providers, often luring them with promises of quick, cheap degrees.

He advised students to verify courses through the Ministry's approved university lists and to check whether their studies would occur on the university's main campus or at an officially accredited branch. Even degrees from reputable universities might be rejected if obtained through unauthorized programs. The Ministry has also launched awareness campaigns in schools to educate students about the importance of verifying qualifications before enrollment and to discourage reliance on promotional materials without proper verification.
