NorthEast United FC Owner John Abraham Predicts Major Shift In Indian Football As ISL Clubs Take Control

Mumbai - NorthEast United FC owner John Abraham envisions a "massive shift in Indian football" as Indian Super League (ISL) teams assume greater control over the premier competition starting the following season. The 2026-27 ISL will adopt a traditional home-and-away format, with 163 matches across eight months, after a shortened single-leg format last year.

Abraham believes this club-led approach could elevate Indian football to new heights, likening it to cricket's prominence in the nation. He expressed optimism alongside other ISL owners, stating their shared commitment to elevating the sport. The AIFF and ISL clubs agreed to allow clubs to manage the competition for two years, securing commercial rights for four years with an option to terminate after two.

While Abraham acknowledged the challenge of competing against wealthy corporations, he emphasized NorthEast United's pride and the league's impact, including a partnership with Reebok and support from public and private entities. The club's recent Durand Cup victories and Abraham's ambition to challenge for the ISL title underscore the club's significance, not only on the field but as a unifying force in the region.

With 13 teams competing, the play-offs will return, with the top six teams facing off in the ISL Cup and the league champion receiving the Shield.
