Mudslide death toll in China rises to 3 after heavy rain from Typhoon Saudel

The death toll from a mudslide in eastern China has risen to three due to heavy rain from Typhoon Saudel, according to reports on Sunday. Nine others remain missing after the disaster struck part of a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province early Saturday. The mudslide caused damage to a dozen houses, prompting rescuers to find two bodies on Sunday, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.

Over 5,300 residents of the county were evacuated to safer locations. Another death related to the typhoon was reported on Saturday in Jiangxi province. Meanwhile, two more fatalities were recorded in Hunan province, south-central China, following downpours caused by the typhoon. Neither the cause of these deaths nor whether Typhoon Saudel was responsible for them was specified in the report.

Typhoon Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang Province on August 28 and a third one in Fujian Province on September 3 as a tropical storm, according to Xinhua, China's official news agency. A separate landslide in Jiangxi province claimed one life a day before the mudslide, but it remains unclear if Typhoon Saudel triggered the incident. As of Sunday, the death toll from China's storms had reached 11 with 50 people still missing.
