Lionel Messi assisted Miami United in their 2-2 draw with Atlanta United on Saturday, marking his first appearance since retiring from international football earlier in the week. The 39-year-old Argentine captain, who led Argentina to World Cup victory in 2022 and finished as runner-up in 2026, entered the match in Florida due to heavy rain and lightning delays.

Messi set up the opening goal for Miami in the 32nd minute when midfielder Casemiro headed in a corner past Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos. However, the lead was short-lived as Casemiro blocked a cross that bounced off Dayne St. Clair and found the feet of Atlanta's Miguel Almiron, who equalized the score. Suarez restored Miami's advantage just before halftime, but Breel Embolo's 87th-minute penalty tied the match and secured Atlanta's point.

Messi, who leads MLS with 18 goals this season, had previously expressed uncertainty about continuing his career following his father's death on August 8.
