EPL: Maresca responds to Enzo Fernandez’s ‘big club’ claim

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has responded to Enzo Fernandez's assertion that he had always dreamt of joining a prestigious club like Manchester City. Fernandez, who transferred from Chelsea to City this summer, completed the move on deadline day for a reported British record transfer fee of £125 million. He signed a five-year contract with the club.

Following the controversy, Fernandez expressed his delight at joining Manchester City in an interview with ESPN. He stated, "I am truly delighted to be here. I have always dreamt to be part of a club as big as City." This comment came as one of emotional significance to Fernandez and his family, marking a significant step in his football career at the age of 25.

He was quoted as saying, "I am thrilled to be here, relishing these initial hours at the club. I can already perceive the magnitude of this club, and I look forward to enjoying our time together and achieving numerous victories." Maresca, who managed Fernandez during his time at Chelsea between June 2024 and January 2026, somewhat disagreed with Fernandez's statement.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Maresca said, "In my opinion, he was at a big club in Chelsea, and now he joins a big club in Man City." Fernandez had played 170 matches for Chelsea across all competitions, scoring 31 goals and assisting 30. He was a key player in helping Chelsea secure the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
