Kyle Whittingham Calls Out Michigan’s Problems After Controversial Win

Kyle Whittingham, Michigan Wolverines head coach, criticized his team's performance in their season-opening game against Western Michigan. The Wolverines ended the match with a 1-0 record but Whittingham made it clear that there was much work to be done. He specifically pointed out areas where the team struggled, including their defensive play, inability to run the ball effectively, losing the turnover margin 3-0, failing to make enough first downs, and not having enough time possessing the ball.

There was no celebration in the locker room, Whittingham noted, as the team understood they still had a long way to go. The Wolverines' performance was underwhelming, with them having possession of the ball for under 20 minutes compared to Western Michigan's 40 minutes. They managed to convert only 3 out of 10 third downs and had a total of nine penalties for 80 yards. The offense was even more disappointing, yielding just 106 rushing yards and 170 passing yards, alongside two fumbles, an interception, and a sack.

Whittingham's comments imply that the team needs significant improvement before their next game against No. 10 Oklahoma on Sept. 12.
