Former Cuban President Raúl Castro reappears at a military event

HAVANA (AP) — Former Cuban President Raúl Castro, now 95 years old, made a surprise appearance at a military event that marked the anniversary of an army branch tasked with safeguarding top leaders. The Cuban state television broadcast footage on Saturday night, capturing Castro in his signature olive-green military uniform, flanked by his bodyguard and grandson, Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro. His last public appearance was on August 13, 2026.

The broadcast also revealed that Castro's grandson had taken part in recent talks with the United States regarding the ongoing oil and financial blockade imposed on Cuba since January. However, these talks have since ceased, and sanctions have intensified in recent months. Both countries have confirmed that negotiations occurred following the energy blockade, but there is no agenda or leaked information about these discussions.

Raúl Castro, who is no longer in any formal government position or the Communist Party, rarely steps out in public. Speculations about his health have intensified, particularly after his absence from a July rally commemorating the Cuban revolution's biggest celebration. In June, the U.S. Department of Justice filed murder charges against the former leader in connection with the 1996 downing of light aircraft belonging to an anti-Castro organization.

The planes had entered Cuban airspace in an attempt to enforce sanctions and pressure for political change in Cuba.

On Saturday, Cuban TV showcased Castro walking alongside high-ranking military officials, sitting in the front row of an indoor venue. He stood up multiple times to receive a commemorative certificate and greet attendees.
