Ex-Sierra Leone President Koroma returns home from Nigeria after treason case dropped

Ernest Bai Koroma, the former President of Sierra Leone, has returned to his home country after a prolonged stay in Nigeria. The government of Nigeria recently dropped criminal charges against Koroma, which had been pending for over two years. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan played a crucial role in facilitating Koroma's return to Sierra Leone, describing him as "his dear friend and brother" in a post on his social media platform.

Koroma served as Sierra Leone's President between 2007 and 2018, before traveling to Nigeria in January 2024 on medical grounds. Despite being initially approved to receive treatment in Nigeria, he remained in the country for more than two years. The Sierra Leonean government officially terminated the treason-related case against him in July 2026, paving the way for his return.

Koroma's departure from Nigeria was announced by Jonathan, who expressed joy at seeing his former leader back in Sierra Leone. Jonathan wished Koroma a safe journey, peace of mind, and success in his new chapter. He also expressed hope that Koroma's return would bring renewed hope and reconciliation to the people of Sierra Leone.
