Jonathan bids farewell to ex-Sierra Leone President after 2 years in Nigeria

Former President Goodluck Jonathan bid farewell to ex-Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma on Sunday, marking the end of the latter's two-year stay in Nigeria. Koroma had fled his home country in January 2024, following treason charges related to the November 2023 attacks in Freetown. However, the Sierra Leonean government subsequently dismissed the charges two months ago, allowing Koroma to return to Sierra Leone.

In a statement, Jonathan expressed satisfaction regarding the reconciliation and renewed hope his departure symbolizes. He described Nigeria as Koroma's "home away from home" during his extended stay in the country, and expressed gratitude for the friendship, support, and solidarity provided to him. "This morning, I had the pleasure of seeing off my dear friend and brother, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma, as he begins his journey home to Sierra Leone," Jonathan said.

Jonathan emphasized Nigeria's role in facilitating Koroma's safe and dignified return, working in tandem with other parties to encourage dialogue and cooperation with the Sierra Leonean authorities. As they bid farewell, Jonathan expressed his hope that Koroma's return would signify a fresh start for the Sierra Leonean people, their families, and the nation.

"President Koroma, I wish you a safe journey, peace of mind and every success in this new chapter. May your return be a moment of renewed hope and reconciliation for you, your family and the people of Sierra Leone," Jonathan expressed.
