Every fourth Jan Dhan account inoperative; 5.72 crore have zero balance: RTI

In Jaipur, an RTI inquiry revealed that one out of every four accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is inoperative, while a staggering 5.72 crore accounts have a zero balance. As of August 12, 2026, the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance reported that there were a total of 59,03,74,907 PMJDY accounts across the country, with a combined balance of ₹3,15,179.90 crore.

Women, including transgender account holders, held 32.89 crore accounts, whereas men held 26.14 crore accounts. Of the 5,72,35,490 accounts with zero balance, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 95.92 lakh such accounts, followed by Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Maharashtra. Similarly, for inoperative accounts, Uttar Pradesh accounted for the highest number at 10.51 crore, followed by Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra.

The Central government does not maintain gender-wise or balance-wise details for PMJDY accounts, only reporting data on a state-wise basis, which covered 36 states and Union territories.
