After quitting politics, former Skudai rep Marina Ibrahim is now Johor Sultan’s special officer for Orang Asli affairs

Johor Bahru, September 6 — After deciding not to stand in the upcoming state election, former Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim is now set to take on a significant role representing the Sultan of Johor in matters concerning the Orang Asli community. Marina, once a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), has been appointed a special officer for Orang Asli affairs under the Sultan Ibrahim Johor Foundation, according to news agency Free Malaysia Today.

Johor's Deputy Chief Minister, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, announced the appointment, explaining that Marina will collaborate with the community to gain a deeper understanding of their needs. Additionally, Israk Abdullah, the state executive councillor for Agriculture, Agro-based Industry and Rural Development, will also oversee the welfare of the Orang Asli.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed confidence in Marina's ability to contribute effectively, emphasizing the importance of her firsthand experience in visiting Orang Asli villages and comprehending the challenges they face. Zahid highlighted that this approach is crucial to ensure the community's problems are identified and addressed appropriately.

Marina had previously announced on May 31 her decision not to defend the Skudai seat in the July 11 state election, stating her intention to continue her social work. The Johor DAP chairman, Teo Nie Ching, later revealed that the party had planned for Marina to contest the Tiram seat. Marina had previously won the Skudai constituency in the 2022 Johor election, defeating candidates from Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.
