Witkoff, Kushner to visit Moscow, Kyiv with proposal to end war in Ukraine

President Trump's aides Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to journey to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend, carrying a novel proposal to put an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The President informed reporters on Friday that he had dispatched the envoys with a peace proposal, citing their exceptional negotiation skills. Trump stated, "We have an idea for peace... two great negotiators... they've done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done."

The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had earlier announced his preparations for a visit from the envoys, emphasizing their mission to engage in constructive and substantive talks aimed at ending the conflict. This will be the first visit for Witkoff and Kushner to Ukraine since Trump assumed office, with a commitment to resolve the conflict in December 2025.

Previously, the duo met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for five hours in December 2025, described as "constructive" by a Russian official, yet no breakthrough was achieved. In September 2025, Trump reiterated his dedication to facilitating a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, expressing optimism about a potential resolution.

However, peace initiatives have faced setbacks following the U.S. military operation in Iran in February, which escalated tensions and led to a prolonged exchange of missile and drone strikes between Russia and Ukraine. The recent drone attack on the SBU security service headquarters in Kyiv, attributed to Russia, underscores the escalating hostilities.
