UN aims to raise nearly $50 million for Nepal flood response

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have initiated a $49.6 million flash appeal to provide emergency aid to over 84,000 individuals impacted by the recent devastating floods in Nepal. The floods, caused by the collapse of a glacier on the Nepal-China border on August 26th, have resulted in more than 1,250 fatalities and left thousands missing. The UN's local humanitarian team estimates that 84,270 Nepalis, comprising 19,284 households, have been affected by the disaster.

A flight facilitated by UNICEF and the European Union, transporting 84 metric tonnes of humanitarian supplies, touched down in the Nepali capital, Kathmandu, on Friday. This shipment will provide crucial support to hundreds of thousands of people, including the distribution of diarrhoea treatment kits, water tanks, hygiene kits, water treatment supplies, winter clothing, and educational materials.

UNICEF Nepal's representative, Alice Akunga, emphasized that the shipment aims to deliver urgent assistance and support children and families with services that safeguard their health, wellbeing, and future.

Humanitarian partners have already mobilized and dispatched relief items to some of the most severely affected regions, primarily focusing on disease prevention and essential infrastructure repairs. According to the latest reports, 17,000 children require immediate aid following the floods.
