Thousands march for democracy ahead of eastern German vote

On Saturday, thousands of people gathered in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, for a march advocating democracy ahead of a regional election. The event, dubbed the Democracy Festival rally, saw participants holding placards with messages such as "more love, less hate," "a better life without Nazis," and "the potato is also of foreign origin." Organized by a coalition of groups known as Saxony-Anhalt: Open to the World, the march aimed to highlight concerns about the political climate in eastern Germany.

Polls indicate that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is leading the race for the Saxony-Anhalt election. With a population of 2.1 million, a victory for the AfD would mark the first regional election win for the far-right in postwar Germany. However, the party does not currently have an absolute majority, which would enable it to govern alone.

Consequently, all other parties have ruled out forming a coalition with the AfD, with the exception of the left-wing pro-Russian party BSW. Members of BSW are divided on whether to join forces with the AfD, adding uncertainty to the political landscape.
