Thousands join rallies before German state election

Thousands of individuals gathered in the Saxony-Anhalt state capital, Magdeburg, on Saturday, a day prior to a significant election for a new regional parliament. The event, described as a democracy festival, saw an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people assemble throughout the day on Cathedral Square. Police later reported a turnout of roughly 10,000 participants across multiple rallies.

Environmental and political advocate Luisa Neubauer expressed concern over the growing trend of right-wing politics. "It would be the biggest mistake at this moment to adopt the proposed solutions of those who have not a shred of interest in defending our democracy, our freedom or the foundations of our lives," she cautioned, advocating for a firm distinction to be made.

The day's proceedings were set to continue with speeches and musical performances well into the evening. The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD), currently leading in the polls, was also scheduled to host its final campaign event at the same location. The far-right party is optimistic about securing a victory in the upcoming Sunday vote and aims for a single-party government in the eastern German state.
