Thousands march for democracy ahead of eastern German vote

A large gathering gathered in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, to demonstrate in support of democracy just before a crucial regional election. The Democratic Festival rally saw thousands of people march through the streets, holding up signs that read "more love, less hate," "a better life without Nazis," and "the potato is also of foreign origin."

The march was organized by a coalition of organizations called Saxony-Anhalt: Open to the World. Among the political parties vying for power in Saxony-Anhalt is the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which currently leads in the polls. If successful, the AfD would achieve a historic victory in the postwar era of Germany, marking an unprecedented political breakthrough for the far-right.

However, success for the AfD is not guaranteed. All other parties have firmly rejected the idea of forming a coalition with the AfD, except for the pro-Russian left-wing party BSW. Members of BSW are divided on the matter, leaving the political landscape uncertain ahead of the election.
