Railways cancels, diverts several trains as water levels rise in Bihar

Indian Railways has cancelled and redirected numerous trains in Bihar due to rising water levels affecting rail operations in the region. The East Central Railway (ECR) reported train services being halted or rerouted because of a high water level near Bridge No. 21, which connects Patna Sahib (PPN) and Patliputra Junction (PRBZ) stations on the down line. This suspension occurred on September 4, 2026, at 8:10 pm until further notice.

Several trains were affected, including MEMU services like Gaya–Patna Junction, Patna Junction–Gaya, and Gaya–Patna Junction MEMU. Additionally, long-distance trains such as the Dhanbad–Patna Express, Patna–Dhanbad Express, Banaras–Rajgir Express, Rajgir–Banaras Express, Purnia Court–Hatia Express, and Hatia–Purnia Court Express were either cancelled or diverted via alternate routes.

The flooding situation in Bihar remains severe, with the Ganga river breaching its highest flood mark at two locations – Gandhi Ghat and Pandarak in Patna. Over 10.26 lakh people across 11 districts have been impacted by the floods. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas in Bhagalpur and Naugachia, reviewing relief and rescue operations.

The Water Resources Department warned that the Ganga water level at Gandhi Ghat could continue to rise to 50.62 meters by early Sunday morning, urging the public to remain vigilant.
