Nepal floods latest: Death toll tops 1,300, more than 5,500 missing as rescue hopes rise

Malaysian wife Hani Othman, who has spent eight days in Nepal, joined a mission on September 5 to distribute humanitarian aid to disaster victims in the country. Hani, currently traveling from Nuwakot to Betrawati with local NGOs Samundra Nepal NGO and Himalayan Leaders, believes that the area where her husband’s last point was found is further up and more difficult to access, but still hopes that their journey will lead to new clues about her missing husband.

The aid items were collected earlier in Kathmandu and donated by local NGOs. Hani shared that she had earlier distributed aid to victims in Kathmandu, including those recently rescued in Timure, and met the wife of her husband’s team vehicle driver. She emphasized that the Malaysians involved in the search are good, generous people and prayed for their well-being and protection.

Hani has not received any news of developments regarding her husband, Mohd Fakhrul Munir Mohd Isa, 44, who was reported missing after a vehicle carrying his Special Airborne Fire and Rescue Team (PASKUB) teammates was believed to have been affected by floods during an expedition to Everest Base Camp on August 26. A total of 55 Malaysians remain unreachable following the disaster, while 77 others found safe in Tibet and Nepal have been brought to Kathmandu for processing before returning to Malaysia.

The death toll has risen to 1,220, with 4,762 people still missing, including 844 foreigners, according to Anadolu Agency.
