Chinese national pulled from Nepal tunnel after 10 days

In Nepal, two additional individuals were rescued from the aftermath of devastating floods that struck the country 10 days ago, officials announced on Saturday. The rescues took place as part of a concerted effort to locate workers trapped in hydropower projects across the nation.

A man was pulled from a hydropower tunnel, raising the total number of workers saved alive from the Trishuli hydropower project to three. The rescue operation involved a joint effort between Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts. The man, found in a 738-foot tunnel, was transported by helicopter to receive a health assessment.

Images captured by media showed the man being evacuated by helicopter, with an army medic monitoring his condition during the flight. CCTV footage released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV depicted two rescuers carrying the man out of the tunnel.

The rescue mission has expanded to encompass 12 hydropower projects across Nepal, where approximately 900 workers are missing, and roughly 500 are presumed trapped in various tunnels. Specialized rescue teams from India, China, South Korea, and the United States have been working tirelessly to search through debris, damaged structures, and tunnels at the projects in an attempt to locate survivors.

In Nuwakot town, which was heavily impacted by the floods, a woman was rescued alive from her residence. The Nepal army spokesperson confirmed her rescue on Saturday, stating that she was being airlifted to Kathmandu. Rescue personnel found the woman covered in mud and provided her with bottled water before safely pulling her to a gray blanket.

The catastrophic floods, believed to be triggered by a glacier collapse, occurred on August 26. The disaster has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,300 people, while over 5,000 individuals remain missing, according to Nepal's disaster management agency.
