Mudavadi urges credible party nominations ahead of 2027

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi urged political aspirants in Western Kenya to focus on credible party nominations, voter registration, and a peaceful election process ahead of the 2027 General Election. Speaking at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu, Mudavadi emphasized that party nominations should create an equal opportunity for both incumbents and challengers.

He stressed that holding an elected position should not secure an aspirant a party ticket, urging candidates to seek voter support based on their records and capacity to mobilize support. Mudavadi stressed that no incumbent should receive preferential treatment in the nomination process, stating that the process must be stronger than any individual.

He called for transparent and rules-based nominations backed by credible membership registers, proper polling arrangements, documented results, and effective dispute-resolution mechanisms. Mudavadi challenged aspirants to prioritize voter registration, noting that about 1.5 million eligible individuals in Kakamega, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Busia, and Vihiga had not yet registered.

According to IEBC data, the five counties received 107,093 new voter registrations between April 9, 2026, and the meeting. Mudavadi cautioned political leaders to safeguard the IEBC's independence and credibility, urging them to rely on verified facts, documents, and lawful processes rather than unverified claims that could damage public confidence.

He cautioned against declaring the 2027 election compromised before any votes were cast and warned that political grievances should be addressed through legal and institutional mechanisms. Party primaries are set for March 17 to April 10, 2027, followed by a dispute-resolution period ending May 8, with the General Election scheduled for August 10, 2027.
