Laguna Seca formally dedicates 'The Zanardi Corkscrew'

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca formally honored its storied history by renaming its most renowned corner, christening it "The Zanardi Corkscrew" in tribute to the late, great two-time CART champion Alex Zanardi. The ceremony unfolded on Friday morning, preceding the IndyCar Series season finale weekend, and commemorated the 30-year anniversary of Zanardi's legendary pass on Bryan Herta in 1996.

This daring maneuver, often referred to simply as "The Pass," became synonymous with Zanardi's indomitable spirit and cemented his legacy at the Monterey track.

A gathering of racing luminaries, industry titans, and enthusiastic fans was in attendance to celebrate Zanardi's unparalleled skills, magnetic personality, and unyielding determination. Laguna Seca President and General Manager Mel Harder kicked off the proceedings by unveiling renderings for a permanent monument to be erected at the turn.

Team owner Chip Ganassi and Chip Ganassi Racing Managing Director Mike Hull reminisced about Zanardi's arrival in 1996, a partnership that swiftly yielded back-to-back CART championships in 1997 and 1998.

On behalf of Zanardi's wife, Daniela, and their son, Niccolò, lifelong friend Max Papis paid a heartfelt tribute. He spoke of Zanardi's unwavering resolve, witty humor, and boundless passion, painting a portrait of a beloved figure in the global motorsports community. The ceremony powerfully juxtaposed IndyCar's rich history with the present day.

Side-by-side on display were Zanardi's championship-winning #4 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda and Alex Palou's current #10 car, decked out in a Zanardi-inspired lightning bolt livery for the season finale.

IndyCar stars Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti, and current champion Alex Palou joined IndyCar President Doug Boles in honoring the racing icon. The event was further distinguished by civic accolades, including an official proclamation from Monterey County and an In Memoriam recognition presented by the California State Assembly. These tributes underscored Zanardi's lasting impact on the sport and beyond.
