IGAD foreign ministers to convene in Djibouti for 74th Extraordinary Session

Nairobi, Kenya - Foreign ministers from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states will gather in Djibouti next week for an extraordinary meeting on September 15, 2026. The 74th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers aims to tackle pressing peace and security challenges in the region. The meeting will bring together foreign ministers and designated representatives from the member states to review security developments, assess ongoing regional initiatives, and explore stronger collective approaches to peace and stability.

The Council of Ministers, one of IGAD's principal policy organs, is tasked with providing political direction and advancing cooperation among member states. The Djibouti meeting will offer ministers an opportunity to evaluate current peace and security efforts and identify areas necessitating greater regional coordination. In addition to immediate security concerns, the Council will discuss institutional issues, such as implementing and strengthening the IGAD Treaty as the regional bloc aims to enhance its capacity to respond to evolving regional priorities.

IGAD emphasized that the discussions will bolster the Authority's mandate and strengthen its ability to address challenges collectively. The organization stated that IGAD member states remain committed to working together to address regional challenges and promote peace, stability, and prosperity for the people of the IGAD region.
