Haaland heads unconvincing Man City top of Premier League

Erling Haaland helped Manchester City secure a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. This marked City's third consecutive perfect start to the season, but the game was a far cry from perfect. The hosts relied on late saves from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to avoid a first top-flight loss for Coventry in 25 years.

Haaland scored the decisive goal midway through the first half, his third goal in three games this season. City's new manager Enzo Maresca brought Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye on as substitutes, who made their debuts alongside Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, and Rayan Cherki. Fernandez had just completed a £125 million move from Chelsea, replacing Nico O'Reilly who was injured during the warm-up.

Coventry had not scored in their previous three games, but they had a chance to break the deadlock early on, thanks to a gift from Donnarumma who mis-controlled a backpass and recovered to clear off his own line. Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni missed big chances to give the visitors the lead before City began to find their rhythm. Cherki hit the post, and Fernandez was involved in the opening goal, setting up Haaland for the header.

Donnarumma had to produce two crucial saves to deny Coventry's Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms an equaliser and a historic moment for the newly-promoted club. Despite the defeat, City moved to the top of the table, just ahead of champions Arsenal's clash against Chelsea on Sunday. Maresca acknowledged that City will need to improve when they travel to local rivals Manchester United next weekend, but the victory gives them a strong position heading into the match.
