Gen Z does not belong to the mob

There is a new political trend in India: anyone who marches in the streets, insults opponents, damages public property, or creates chaos is quickly labeled as the true voice of "Gen Z." This label is then seized by political groups and vested interests who want to lend their own agenda the appearance of youthful activism. This portrayal does a great injustice to India's young people.

The loudest voices are not necessarily the ones that truly represent their generation. And those who destroy public property, attack institutions, hurl abuse, or turn political disagreements into violence cannot claim to speak for the millions of young Indians simply because they are young. India's Gen Z is far larger, more diverse, and far more accomplished than the political street theater through which some of its supposed representatives are being portrayed.
