Pune woman dies after temporary structure at Dahi Handi event collapses

A woman in Pune, Salma Salauddin Pathan, passed away after a temporary metal structure erected for a Dahi Handi celebration during Janmashtami fell on her. Pathan, aged 45 and from Juni Sangvi, was struck by the collapse of the truss around 10 pm. She suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zone 1, Sandeep Atole, stated that the structure was being dismantled when it suddenly collapsed. Pathan's death has prompted a case of accidental death to be registered by the Sangvi police, with an investigation into potential negligence underway. Dahi Handi, a tradition marking Lord Krishna's birth, involves teams forming pyramids to break pots filled with sweets at high altitudes.

Safety guidelines are issued by authorities to prevent such incidents during the festivities, which draw large crowds and are celebrated across India.
