F1 Italian GP: Pierre Gasly takes shock maiden pole at F1 Italian GP

French driver Pierre Gasly secured an unexpected pole position for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Saturday, marking his first ever pole in 191 attempts. Gasly will start the race on the front row alongside George Russell of Mercedes. McLaren's Oscar Piastri claimed the third spot on the grid, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing the final two places.

Gasly expressed his excitement, stating, "It has been nine years, chipping away and trying to get pole. Won my first race in Monza, and now my first pole." Notably, Gasly is the first French driver to take pole at Monza since Jean Alesi in 1997. The 30-year-old also won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at the same circuit, his only Grand Prix victory to date.

Gasly's triumph is particularly sweet, as he avenged a third-place finish at the preceding Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year. The FIA International Court of Appeal upheld penalties against Red Bull and McLaren, resulting in Gasly losing his position. Currently, championship leader Kimi Antolin is poised to start from the back of the grid after exceeding the permitted number of power unit changes.
