From ashes to architectural hotspot, Gangneung temple draws global attention

The once devastated Inwol Temple in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, has been transformed into a modern architectural marvel, drawing global attention. The temple's unique facade, composed of brightly colored rectangles arranged in a gentle curve, has captivated the imagination of many. This distinctive design has prompted contemplation on whether it helps monks break free from worldly thoughts or instead fuels a flood of ideas and inspiration.

In March, the temple gained international recognition when it won the prestigious WA Award from the World Architecture Community. The news of this achievement quickly spread, leading to the temple being labeled as an example of "hip Buddhism" and even inspiring memes. However, Inwol Temple is just one of several noteworthy architectural spaces in Gangneung.

Aside from the temple, the coastal city boasts other stylish architectural spaces, such as the Sorol Art Museum. This public building showcases an unexpected resemblance to its architectural rendering, adding to the city's diverse and visually appealing offerings. One notable example is Inwol Temple, a single crescent-shaped building that adopts the curve of the Buddha's eyebrow as its design inspiration.

Rather than compartmentalize the temple into separate prayer halls and meditation centers, the whole structure embodies the flowing shape, creating a harmonious and visually striking space.
