Piastri hit with grid penalty at Italian Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri was penalized three places on the grid at the Italian Grand Prix for impeding Red Bull's Liam Lawson during qualifying. The McLaren driver, who started third, will now begin the race from sixth. This decision came after stewards determined that Piastri obstructed Lawson. Despite starting seventh in the standings, Piastri is now on the third row of the grid, alongside Max Verstappen, who secured the fastest qualifying lap of the day for Red Bull.

The penalty means Ferrari lines up second on the grid with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, ahead of surprise pole sitter Pierre Gasly and George Russell. Gasly, who won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, claimed pole position after finishing ahead of Mercedes' George Russell. The 2020 champion expressed his joy at securing the pole, noting it was his first race win at Monza and first career pole at the track.

Russell, also a title contender, praised Gasly's performance, stating that he had been beating the Frenchman in practice and qualifying phases. Gasly's victory comes just a day after he was demoted from third to fourth place in qualifying at the previous Monaco Grand Prix.
