Enquirer announces Spirit Award winners for Sept. 4

The Cincinnati Enquirer has introduced a new weekly feature called The Spirit Award, honoring the achievements of cheerleaders, dancers, and their respective squads. Fans and school supporters voted on two weekly ballots, one for individual recognition and the other for team accolades. Coaches were responsible for nominating deserving squads or individuals each week.

Eligible recipients were varsity girls and boys cheerleaders and dancers who displayed admirable qualities such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These traits were evident in their ability to uplift their squads, the student body, and the wider community.

This week's Spirit Award winners were announced on September 4. The first individual honoree was Maddy Yenser from Lakota East High School. A senior, Maddy has become a leader within her program by actively mentoring younger cheerleaders. Her natural talent for teaching cheers and ensuring all team members understand and feel confident in their performances has been instrumental.

Maddy's creativity and initiative were showcased when she organized a scavenger hunt to introduce squad families and strengthen team connections. Additionally, she played a crucial role in developing the dance for the pep rally and manages the team's Instagram account, promoting the program and increasing its visibility within the community. Maddy's leadership, creativity, and dedication have significantly impacted her team.

The second winner of the week was the Talawanda High School varsity cheerleaders. This team has been diligently working to raise school spirit throughout the fall sports and activities seasons. By collaborating with the Student Section and the Athletic Booster Club, they have successfully elevated the school's overall enthusiasm for their sports teams.
