Bolivia: Deadly explosion rocks military base in Viacha

A deadly explosion struck a military base in Viacha, Bolivia on Friday, resulting in at least 10 deaths and 59 injuries, according to local authorities. The blast occurred at around 2:30 p.m. local time in an area designated for pyrotechnic materials storage. The explosion took place in the western city of Viacha, approximately 30 kilometers from La Paz.

Initial reports from police suggested two deaths and several missing persons, but these figures have since been updated. Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano stated that 52 of the injured were civilians, while the remaining 7 were military personnel. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion.

Fourteen wounded individuals were transported to hospitals in La Paz, including a girl who suffered third-degree burns. Viacha health director Rita Nebraska informed local television that the death toll may range from 10 to 15 people. Fourteen ambulances, rescue teams, and medical professionals have been dispatched to the site to provide assistance to the injured and evaluate the extent of the damage.

Police spokesperson Roger Roca reported that seven individuals are still missing. The blast caused significant damage to nearby homes, with windows shattering as a result. Firefighters have cautioned that a heat source remains at the site, posing a risk of another explosion, and have advised residents to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters.
