At least two dead in blast at Bolivia military barracks

At least two people have been killed in an explosion at a military barracks in Bolivia, with authorities warning the death toll could be higher. The incident occurred around 14:30 local time on Friday when pyrotechnic material detonated at the barracks in Viacha, located about 30km from La Paz. Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano confirmed that at least 58 individuals were injured in the incident.

Health official Rita Nebraska reported that between 10 and 15 people are believed to have died, citing local television. Police stated that dozens of homes were damaged, primarily with shattered windows, and emergency responders are currently searching the rubble. Nebraska cautioned that there is a risk of further explosions, urging people to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters from the military base.

Police spokesman Roger Roca informed AFP that fireworks were reportedly stored at the barracks, and the cause of the blast is under investigation. Viacha authorities have declared three days of mourning.
