At least two dead in blast at Bolivia military barracks

An explosion at a military barracks in Bolivia has claimed at least two lives, with authorities expressing concern that the death toll may rise. The blast, which occurred around 14:30 local time on Friday, involved pyrotechnic material detonating at the facility where an artillery regiment is based, according to Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano.

Health official Rita Nebraska stated that between 10 and 15 individuals are believed to have perished in the incident, which took place in Viacha, roughly 30km from La Paz. Police reported that numerous homes were damaged, primarily due to shattered windows, and emergency responders are combing the debris for further victims. A police spokesman warned of the potential for additional explosions and advised residents to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters from the site.

The cause of the blast is currently under investigation, with fireworks having reportedly been stored at the barracks. In response to the tragedy, Viacha authorities have declared three days of mourning.
